This safe, non-invasive technique helps diagnose and treat various thyroid conditions by providing both structural and functional information about your thyroid.

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of your neck. It produces hormones that control your metabolism, which affects your energy levels, heart rate, weight, body temperature, and many other vital functions throughout your body.

Your doctor may order a thyroid scan to evaluate thyroid nodules or lumps, assess thyroid size and shape, determine if your thyroid is overactive or underactive, identify areas of abnormal thyroid tissue, monitor thyroid conditions, or plan treatment for thyroid disorders.

The duration varies by exam type. A basic thyroid scan typically takes 30 to 45 minutes. A thyroid uptake scan requires multiple visits over 24 hours to measure how your thyroid absorbs iodine over time. Your scheduling team will inform you of the expected time commitment for your specific exam.
